Brake Pipe Corrosion: The Hidden MOT Killer Across the JLR Range
Corroded brake pipes are one of the most dangerous MOT failures — and one of the most common across older Jaguar, Land Rover, and Range Rover vehicles. A pipe that's corroded on the outside may look rough but hold pressure. A pipe that's corroded through will burst under heavy braking, causing partial or total brake failure. There's no warning before it happens.

The Scale of the Problem
Brake pipe corrosion and brake hose ferrule corrosion are among the top individual MOT failure items across nearly every JLR model over 10 years old. The combined numbers are stark:

The Freelander 1 is the worst — 1 in 7 cars fails on corroded brake components. The Discovery 4 and Discovery 3 are close behind. Even the relatively modern Range Rover L405, with its aluminium body, has 826 corroded brake pipe failures — because the brake lines themselves are still steel.
Why It Happens
JLR vehicles use steel brake pipes as standard. Steel is strong and cheap, but it corrodes when exposed to:
- Road salt — the #1 accelerator. UK winter salting attacks the pipes from the outside
- Water and mud — Land Rovers and Range Rovers are exposed to more water and debris than most cars, particularly around the underbody where the pipes run
- Age — corrosion is cumulative. A 10-year-old pipe has had 10 winters of salt exposure
- Stone chips — the protective coating on the pipes gets chipped by road debris, exposing the steel underneath
The pipes corrode from the outside in. By the time surface corrosion is visible, the pipe wall is already significantly thinner. Internal pressure can burst a weakened pipe without warning.
The Ferrule Problem
The ferrule is the metal crimp where a flexible brake hose meets the rigid pipe or caliper. On JLR vehicles, these ferrules are particularly prone to corrosion — the junction between different metals (steel ferrule, copper washers, aluminium caliper) creates galvanic corrosion that accelerates the process.
The Discovery 3 has 1,166 hose ferrule corrosion failures — higher than its pipe corrosion count. This suggests the ferrule is the weakest point in the system on that model.
Which Models Are Affected?
High Risk (10+ years old, steel chassis/body)
These models have the highest brake pipe corrosion rates and should be inspected annually:
- Freelander 1 L314 — the worst-affected JLR vehicle (1 in 7)
- Discovery 3 L319 — combined pipe and ferrule corrosion at 1 in 15

Moderate Risk (aluminium body, steel brake lines)
These models have aluminium bodies that don't corrode — but the brake lines are still steel:
- Range Rover L405 — 826 failures despite the aluminium body
- XJ X350 — 428 combined failures
- XF X260 — 122 hose ferrule failures appearing on earlier examples
- XK X150 — beginning to show corrosion on the earliest cars
Low Risk (too new)
- New Defender L663 — no brake pipe corrosion in the top 25 failures
- I-Pace — minimal braking system exposure (regenerative braking)
- Evoque Mk2 L551 — too young for significant corrosion
The Irony: Aluminium Body, Steel Pipes
One of the most striking findings in the data is that brake pipe corrosion affects aluminium-bodied cars too. The Range Rover L405 has 826 corroded pipe failures — on a car whose body will never rust. The XJ X350 has 428.
The body may be corrosion-proof, but the brake lines underneath it aren't. JLR — and most manufacturers — still use steel brake pipes even on aluminium-bodied vehicles. It's a cost decision at the factory that creates a maintenance burden for owners.
The Fix: Cunifer Brake Pipes
The permanent solution is to replace the steel brake pipes with Cunifer — a copper-nickel alloy (typically 90% copper, 10% nickel) that is:
- Corrosion-resistant — Cunifer doesn't rust. A Cunifer pipe will outlast the car
- Easier to work with — softer than steel, easier to bend and flare
- Compatible — works with standard brake fittings
- MOT compliant — fully legal for road use

How to Inspect
You can check brake pipe condition yourself with basic tools:
- Get under the car — safely supported on axle stands or a ramp
- Follow each brake pipe from the master cylinder to each caliper
- Look for surface corrosion — light surface rust is normal on steel pipes. Flaking, pitting, or scaling is not
- Feel for weakness — gently press corroded areas with your thumb. If the pipe feels soft or deforms, it's dangerously thin
- Check the ferrules — where the flexible hoses meet the calipers. Look for white/green deposits (galvanic corrosion) or swelling
- Look for wet patches — brake fluid weeping from a corroded area means the pipe has already perforated
When to Replace
- Any pipe with deep pitting, flaking, or scaling — replace immediately
- Any pipe that feels soft under thumb pressure — replace immediately
- Any ferrule with visible corrosion or swelling — replace the hose
- Any wet patch near a pipe or ferrule — the pipe has failed. Do not drive the car
Prevention
- Annual inspection — check the pipes every year, especially after winter
- Underseal treatment — waxoyl or similar cavity wax on the underbody protects the pipes from salt spray
- Wash the underside — particularly after winter driving, to remove salt residue
- Proactive replacement — if the car is over 15 years old and still on original pipes, replace them with Cunifer before they fail. It's cheaper than an emergency repair — and infinitely cheaper than a brake failure at speed.
