1. Suspension Joint Dust Covers — The #1 Jaguar MOT Failure

The single most common reason a Jaguar fails its MOT. The rubber dust covers that protect suspension ball joints and bushes from dirt and moisture perish with age, cracking and splitting until they no longer do their job. A split dust cover is an MOT failure even if the joint underneath is perfectly fine.

The older steel-bodied cars (S-Type, X-Type) and the early aluminium models (XK X150, XJ X350) are worst affected — they're simply old enough for every rubber component to have perished. On the XK X150, dust covers alone account for nearly 28% of all failures.

What You Need

2. Tyre Damage & Tread Depth

The dominant failure on every modern Jaguar. On the newer aluminium models (F-Type, I-Pace, XF X260, XE), tyre issues have overtaken suspension as the #1 failure category — accounting for 33–62% of all failures depending on model.

4. Brake Pad Wear

Brake pads worn below 1.5mm is a top-five individual failure on most Jaguars. The heavier the car, the faster the pads wear — the XJ and F-Pace are worst.

Tip: Always check the discs when replacing pads — they often need doing at the same time, especially on the heavier models. The I-Pace's regenerative braking means its pads last far longer than any ICE Jaguar.


5. Steering Rack Gaiters

The rubber gaiters that protect the steering rack deteriorate with age — the same rubber degradation story as the suspension dust covers. A split gaiter is an MOT failure.

6. Headlamp Aim Outside Limits

Headlamp aim is a surprisingly common failure across the range — and the causes differ between older and newer cars.

Older Jaguars (S-Type, X-Type, XK8, XJ X350): The manual headlamp adjusters corrode and seize, and the mounting points rust — the headlamp physically droops. This is a steel-body-era problem.

Newer Jaguars (XF, XE, XJ X351, F-Type): The adaptive headlamp system uses self-levelling motors and sensors. When these fail, the beam pattern drifts outside the limits — an MOT failure even if the headlamps themselves work perfectly.

Tip: On xenon/HID or LED-equipped Jaguars, the headlamp washers must work for the car to pass the MOT. A blocked washer jet or failed pump means the car fails — even if the headlamps and aim are perfect.


7. Wiper Blades

Wiper blade failure is in the top 10 individual failures on every Jaguar model. It's the easiest and cheapest fix on this list — but owners consistently leave it too late.

Tip: Replace the wipers before every MOT. They're under £20 and it's one of the most common reasons for failure. If the car sits unused for long periods, the rubber perishes even without use.


8. Windscreen Washer Failure

Windscreen washers not working or not providing sufficient fluid is a top-10 failure on every Jaguar over 10 years old. The heated washer jets corrode and block, the pumps seize from inactivity, and the reservoir can crack.

9. Engine Management Light (MIL)

The engine management light being illuminated is a mandatory MOT failure since 2018. It's a significant failure across the range, but the causes vary dramatically between petrol and diesel models.

Diesel Jaguars (XF, XE, X-Type 2.2): DPF regeneration failures, EGR valve clogging, AdBlue/NOx sensor faults, and timing chain stretch (Ingenium engines) are the main triggers.

Petrol Jaguars (V6, V8, supercharged): Catalytic converter inefficiency, lambda sensor degradation, and secondary air injection faults.

Tip: If you drive a diesel Jaguar, take it on the motorway for 20+ minutes at least once a fortnight. Short urban journeys prevent the DPF from regenerating — and incomplete regen causes oil dilution, which accelerates timing chain wear. It's a cascading problem.


10. Structural Corrosion (Steel-Bodied Jaguars Only)

This only affects the steel-bodied Jaguars — the X-Type, S-Type, and XK8 X100. The aluminium models (everything from the XJ X350 onwards) have effectively zero structural corrosion.

The X-Type's subframe mounting point corrosion (2,552 failures — 1 in 10 cars) is the single most common individual failure on the entire car. Once the mounting points corrode through, fitting new suspension components is pointless — the structure they bolt to has failed.

Tip: If you're buying a steel-bodied Jaguar (X-Type, S-Type, or XK8), get underneath and check the subframe mounts, sills, and floor pan before committing. Structural corrosion is the #1 reason these cars get scrapped — and it's often uneconomical to repair.
