Jaguar S-Type MOT Failures: Common Issues & Parts Guide (X200, 1999–2007)

The Jaguar S-Type was Jaguar's return to the compact executive class — a Ford DEW98 platform shared with the Lincoln LS, dressed in retro-styled bodywork that divided opinion but delivered a genuine Jaguar experience. Available with 2.5 and 3.0 V6 petrols, a 4.0 and later 4.2 V8, and from 2004 the 2.7 TDV6 diesel (shared with the XF), it sold well but has depreciated heavily. With the youngest examples now 19 years old and 11,181 MOT tests recorded in 2024, the S-Type's MOT data reveals a car struggling against age. Here's what's failing and the parts you need.

S-Type MOT Pass Rate

The S-Type holds a 66.7% MOT pass rate — 10 percentage points below the UK average of 76.7%. That's the second-lowest pass rate of any Jaguar we've analysed (only the X-Type is worse at 63.7%), and lower than both the Discovery 2 and D3. Unlike its aluminium successors (XF, XE, XJ X351), the S-Type has a steel body that corrodes, and at 19–27 years old, it's paying the price.

The earliest cars (1999–2001) are failing at nearly 4 in 10. The median mileage at MOT is 91,176 miles — lower than the Discoverys but reflecting moderately high usage for a car of this age. With 14,076 failure items from 11,181 tests, the S-Type averages 1.26 failures per test — multiple items failing simultaneously on many cars.


1. Suspension — A Dominant 41.5% of All Failures

Suspension overwhelmingly dominates the S-Type's failure profile, accounting for 41.5% of all failure items (5,835 items). Two items drive the numbers.

What Fails

  • Suspension joint dust cover deteriorated — 2,466 failures (the #1 item — 17.5% of ALL failures)
  • Steering rack gaiter deteriorated — 1,031 failures (the #2 item)
  • Suspension pin, bush or joint excessively worn — 927 failures
  • Shock absorber bush excessively worn — 223 failures
  • Spring fractured or weakened — 164 failures
  • Steering ball joint with excessive wear — 181 failures

The dust cover count at 2,466 is extraordinary — 1 in 5 S-Types tested fails on perished suspension dust covers alone. Combined with steering rack gaiters at 1,031, rubber degradation accounts for nearly 25% of all failure items. At 19–27 years old, every rubber component on the suspension and steering is well past its design life.

Tip: A proactive rubber refresh — all suspension dust covers, steering gaiters, and bushes — before the MOT will address over a quarter of all potential failures in one session. At this age, doing it piecemeal is pointless — replace everything.


2. Brakes — 13.8% of Failures

Brakes account for 13.8% of failure items (1,943 items).

  • Brake lining/pad worn below 1.5mm — 299 failures
  • Brake pipe corroded — 274 failures
  • Brake binding — 227 failures
  • Parking brake efficiency below minimum — 161 failures
  • Parking brake inoperative on one side — 128 failures

The brake pipe corrosion at 274 is a concern — like the Discovery, the S-Type's steel brake lines are corroding with age. The parking brake failures (289 combined) reflect the S-Type's cable-operated parking brake mechanism seizing from underuse and corrosion.

Tip: Exercise the handbrake regularly — seized cables and corroded caliper mechanisms are an expensive fix. Replace corroded brake lines with Cunifer (copper-nickel) for a permanent solution.


3. Lamps & Lighting — 13.7% of Failures

Lighting accounts for 13.7% of failure items (1,932 items).

What Fails

  • Headlamp aim outside limits — 722 failures (the #4 individual item — 1 in 15 cars)
  • Lamp inoperative — 248 failures
  • Stop lamp inoperative — 153 failures

The headlamp aim count at 722 is remarkably high — only the Discovery 2 is worse. The S-Type's headlamp adjusters corrode and seize, and the mounting points rust. Corrosion in bulb holders and earth connections accounts for the general lamp failures.

The MIL count at 345 — 1 in 32 cars — is the second-highest ratio of any Jaguar (behind only the X-Type at 1 in 29). At this age, catalytic converter efficiency degrades, lambda sensors fail, and on the 2.7 TDV6 diesel, DPF and EGR issues compound the problem.

7. Structure & Body — 3.5% of Failures

Structural corrosion accounts for 3.5% of failure items (494 items) — far less than the Discovery 2 (13.4%) but significant for a Jaguar, and a stark contrast to the zero-corrosion aluminium cars that followed.

  • Load bearing structure near suspension/subframe mounting reduced — 599 failures
  • Vehicle structure corroded — rigidity reduced — 315 failures
  • Structure near seat belt anchorage reduced — 312 failures
  • Body corroded at mounting point — 155 failures

The S-Type's steel monocoque corrodes at the rear subframe mounts, the sills, and the floor pan — particularly around the seat belt anchorages. Unlike the ladder-frame Discoverys where repair sections are available, S-Type structural repairs are body panel work and significantly more complex.

Tip: Check the rear subframe mounts and sills carefully before buying. Structural corrosion is difficult and expensive to repair on a monocoque car — and at S-Type values, it's usually uneconomical.


Beyond the MOT: Major S-Type Faults That Drive Workshop Visits

J-Gate Selector Failure

The S-Type's distinctive J-Gate gear selector is a known failure point. The selector mechanism wears and the car won't engage Drive or Reverse, or gets stuck in Park. The microswitch assembly inside the selector is the usual culprit.

Timing Chain Issues (4.0/4.2 V8)

The V8 engines use timing chains with tensioners that can fail — the same basic issue that affects all Jaguar V8s. A cold-start rattle is the warning sign. Regular oil changes with the correct specification are the best preventative measure.

Throttle Body Failure (2.7 TDV6)

The 2.7 TDV6 (fitted from 2004) shares the same throttle body clogging issue as the XF — the butterfly valve sticks, triggering "Restricted Performance" mode and preventing DPF regeneration.

Keeping Your Jaguar S-Type on the Road

The S-Type is a paradox — it offers a genuine Jaguar driving experience for almost nothing (prices start at a few hundred pounds), but maintaining it costs more than the car is worth. A 66.7% pass rate, 1.26 failures per test, and structural corrosion make it the hardest Jaguar to keep on the road.

The S-Type's saving grace is that it's a fundamentally simple car by modern Jaguar standards. The V6 petrols are reliable, parts are affordable, and the Ford platform means many components are shared with other vehicles.
