7. Structure & Body — 3.5% of Failures

The S-Type's steel monocoque corrodes at the rear subframe mounts, the sills, and the floor pan — particularly around the seat belt anchorages. Unlike the ladder-frame Discoverys where repair sections are available, S-Type structural repairs are body panel work and significantly more complex.
Tip: Check the rear subframe mounts and sills carefully before buying. Structural corrosion is difficult and expensive to repair on a monocoque car — and at S-Type values, it's usually uneconomical.

J-Gate Selector Failure
The S-Type's distinctive J-Gate gear selector is a known failure point. The selector mechanism wears and the car won't engage Drive or Reverse, or gets stuck in Park. The microswitch assembly inside the selector is the usual culprit.
