The Discovery 5 (L462) launched in 2017 as a radical departure from the rugged, boxy styling of its predecessors. Built on Land Rover's aluminium-intensive D7u platform — shared with the Range Rover Sport — it shed up to 480 kg compared to the Discovery 4, delivering a more car-like driving experience while retaining full seven-seat capability with a stadium-seating layout that gives all three rows a clear forward view.

Engine options include 2.0-litre Ingenium four-cylinder petrol and diesel units with mild-hybrid technology, and a 3.0-litre inline-six in both petrol (P360) and diesel (D250/D300) forms, also with 48V mild-hybrid. Earlier models offered a 3.0-litre supercharged V6 petrol and a 3.0-litre TDV6 diesel. All are paired with a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission and permanent all-wheel drive with a two-speed transfer case and Terrain Response 2.

The interior features Land Rover's InControl Touch Pro infotainment system — upgraded to Pivi Pro with the 2021 facelift — and a host of practical touches including Intelligent Seat Fold technology that allows all seven seats to be configured remotely via smartphone. The powered inner tailgate and optional full-size spare wheel mounted beneath the boot floor maintain the Discovery's reputation for versatility.

With a kerb weight of 2,160–2,380 kg, a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 kg, and a wading depth of 900mm, the Discovery 5 remains one of the most capable full-size seven-seat SUVs available — blending genuine off-road ability with the comfort and technology of a modern luxury vehicle.
