Best Value: XF X250 (2012–2015)

If budget is the priority, the later XF X250s offer an astonishing amount of car for £5,000–£10,000. An 81.7% pass rate at 106,000 miles median mileage is respectable. The aluminium body won't corrode. The 3.0 diesel is smooth and powerful (but check the timing belt history). The 2.0 diesel is more economical.

Why this car: Huge depreciation means low entry price. Still a handsome, comfortable car. Parts are plentiful and affordable.

Budget for: Suspension bushes and dust covers (65.7% of failures), brake pads, tyres.

Best Sports Car: F-Type (2016+)

The F-Type's 91.9% pass rate is the second-highest of any Jaguar. At just 28,300 miles median mileage, these cars are barely used. The 3.0 V6 is the sweet spot — enough power to be exciting, cheaper to run and insure than the V8.

Why this car: One of the most beautiful sports cars of the decade, with genuine reliability data to back it up. The main MOT risk is tyres (45.8% of failures) — everything else is minimal.

Budget for: Tyres (they wear fast on a RWD sports car), wiper blades (replace before MOT — it's the #3 failure), timing chain monitoring (supercharged V6/V8).

Best Electric: I-Pace (2020+)

The I-Pace tops the Jaguar reliability table at 93.2% — and it eliminates entire maintenance categories. No oil changes, no timing chains, no exhaust to corrode, no DPF to clog. Brakes barely wear (regenerative braking does the work). The only MOT weakness is tyres (62.3% of failures — the EV weight tax).

Why this car: The lowest maintenance Jaguar ever made. Prices have dropped significantly from new. The 2020+ models benefit from production improvements.

Budget for: Tyres (budget more than you'd expect — the 2.2-tonne weight eats them), 12V battery (keep it charged if the car sits unused), wiper blades.

Best Luxury Saloon: XJ X351 (2013+)

The XJ X351 passes at 83.3% — respectable for a full-size luxury saloon. The 2013+ cars pass at 81%+, and the 2017–2019 models exceed 90%. The aluminium body means no corrosion. The interior is genuinely special. And prices have dropped to absurd levels for what you get.

Why this car: A full-size Jaguar flagship for the price of a well-specced hatchback. The V6 diesel is smooth and economical. The 5.0 V8 is magnificent (but watch the timing chain and cooling system).

Budget for: Tyres and suspension (together 63% of failures), air suspension (if equipped), TPMS sensors.

Best Modern Classic: XK X150 (2009+)

The XK X150 passes at 81.4% — strong for a car up to 20 years old. The 2009+ facelift models with the 5.0 V8 are the ones to have: more power, better electronics, and a refined driving experience. The aluminium body means the structure will outlast everything else.

Why this car: Beautiful GT, genuine appreciation potential, aluminium body that won't rot. The 5.0 NA V8 is one of the great modern engines.

Budget for: Suspension dust covers (27.8% of ALL failures — the #1 item), steering gaiters (8.4%), brake hose replacement. A proactive rubber refresh addresses over a third of potential failures.

Which Jaguars to Approach with Caution

X-Type X400 — 63.7% Pass Rate

The cheapest Jaguar to buy but potentially the most expensive to keep. Structural corrosion is the #1 failure (1 in 10 cars). The parking brake fails on 1 in 19. The engine MIL rate is the highest of any Jaguar (1 in 29). At current values (often under £1,000), a single MOT failure frequently exceeds the car's worth.

S-Type X200 — 66.7% Pass Rate

Better than the X-Type but still struggling. Structural corrosion, perished rubber, and aged emissions components all contribute. The steel body is the fundamental issue — it corrodes in ways the aluminium cars simply don't.

XK8 X100 — 77.4% Pass Rate (with caveats)

Actually a reasonable pass rate for a 21–30 year old car, but structural corrosion at ~16% combined is the existential threat. Check the rear subframe mounts and sills carefully. If the structure is sound, the XK8 is a rewarding and increasingly collectible car. If it's not, walk away.


The Key Insight: Buy Aluminium

The single most important factor when buying a used Jaguar is body construction. Every steel-bodied Jaguar (X-Type, S-Type, XK8) sits below 78% pass rate and has significant structural corrosion. Every aluminium-bodied Jaguar (XJ X350 onwards) sits above 75% and has effectively zero corrosion.

The aluminium body will outlast everything bolted to it. That means every repair is worth doing — you're always working on a sound structure. On a steel-bodied car, structural corrosion can make every other repair pointless.
