1. Suspension Bush & Joint Wear — The Universal Land Rover Weakness

The #1 individual failure item on every single Land Rover model. Worn suspension bushes and joints cause clunking, imprecise handling, and uneven tyre wear — and they fail the MOT when the play exceeds the allowed limits.

The Discovery 3 is the worst — 1 in 7 D3s tested fails on worn suspension bushes. The New Defender at 16 failures is a world apart — it simply hasn't had time to wear yet.

The root cause is the same across the range: Land Rovers are heavy vehicles (1,700–2,700 kg) running on independent suspension systems with multiple arms, bushes, and joints per corner. At high mileage (the D3 and D2 average 151,000 miles), every bush has been compressed millions of times.

Tip: On the D3, D4, and Freelanders, a full axle rebuild (all arms, bushes, and ball joints on one axle) is far more economical than piecemeal replacement. Labour is the expensive part — and by the time one bush has gone, the others on that axle will fail within months.


2. Brake Pipe Corrosion — The Hidden Safety Issue

The most dangerous failure on any Land Rover. Steel brake pipes corrode from the inside out over time, and when they fail, you lose braking pressure. A corroded pipe is an MOT failure — and a burst pipe is a life-threatening emergency.

Tip: Replace all steel brake lines with Cunifer (copper-nickel) — it's corrosion-resistant and a permanent fix. This is the single most impactful safety improvement you can make on any older Land Rover. Don't wait for the MOT to find a corroded pipe — inspect annually.


3. Lighting Failures — Check Every Bulb

Lighting is consistently one of the top three failure categories across every Land Rover model, with stop lamps, headlamp aim, and general lamp failures all ranking in individual top-10 lists. The causes are age-related: corroded bulb holders, water ingress into light clusters, and failed earth connections.

The Freelander 1 has the highest lighting failure rate of any vehicle we've analysed at 23.2%. The rear light clusters on both Freelanders and both Discoverys are notorious for water ingress.

  • Stop lamps — 1,464 failures on the FL1 alone (1 in 16 cars), 1,739 on the FL2, 1,212 on the D3
  • Headlamp aim — 1,688 on the FL1, 1,621 on the FL2, 1,256 on the D3
  • Registration plate lamp — 1,112 on the FL1, 883 on the D4
  • Headlamp inoperative — 2,124 on the FL2 (hard-to-access bulbs discourage prompt replacement)

Tip: Check every single light on the car before the MOT — front, rear, side, indicators, fog, number plate, reversing, and the high-level brake light. Most lighting failures are corrosion at the connector, not a dead bulb. Remove the rear clusters, clean every connector, and apply dielectric grease.


4. Parking Brake Failure

The parking brake is a major failure item across the Land Rover range — particularly on the Freelander 2, where it's the 4th most common individual failure.

The mechanism is the same across most models: cable-operated rear calipers that corrode and seize from a combination of age, exposure to salt and water, and underuse. The caliper piston mechanism sticks, the cables corrode inside their sleeves, and the adjustment mechanism freezes.

Tip: Use the handbrake at every drive — don't just leave the car in Park. Lubricate the cables and rear caliper mechanisms at every service. If the handbrake feels weak, address it before the MOT — the caliper and cables typically both need replacing together.


5. Tyre Damage & Tread Depth

Tyres are a top-five failure on every Land Rover, driven by the sheer weight of these vehicles (1,700–2,700 kg) and the large wheel/tyre combinations fitted.

The New Defender mirrors the modern Jaguar pattern — tyres dominate the failure profile because there's so little else going wrong. On the older models, tyres are still significant but overshadowed by suspension and brake issues.

Tip: Worn suspension bushes throw alignment out, accelerating tyre wear. Fix the suspension first, then replace the tyres — otherwise the new tyres will wear unevenly.


6. CV Joint Boot Deterioration

The rubber boots that protect the constant velocity joints on the driveshafts perish and split, allowing grease out and dirt in. It's a failure specific to four-wheel-drive vehicles — every Land Rover has CV joints at each corner plus the propshaft.

7. Structural Corrosion

Structural corrosion is the existential threat to older Land Rovers. The steel chassis members, subframe mounts, and body attachment points corrode from the inside out — invisible until they fail an MOT or, worse, fail structurally.

The Discovery 2 is worst — nearly 5,700 structural corrosion items from 25,009 tests. The progression from D2 (13.4%) to D3 (5.2%) to D4 (0.9%) to New Defender (0.3%) shows how improved construction and corrosion protection have gradually eliminated this issue.

Tip: Annual underseal inspection and cavity wax treatment are essential for any D2, D3, or FL1. Pay particular attention to the rear chassis rails, rear subframe mounts, and areas around the fuel tank. Structural corrosion is the #1 reason older Land Rovers are scrapped.


8. Brake Pad Wear

Brake pad wear appears in the top 10 individual failures on every Land Rover. These are heavy vehicles with heavy braking demands.
