1. Tyre Damage & Tread Depth — The Weight Tax

The dominant failure on every modern Range Rover. These are the heaviest vehicles in the JLR range — the full-size Range Rover exceeds 2,500 kg — and that weight destroys tyres. Tyre damage is the #1 individual failure item on the L405, L460, Velar, New Defender, and both Range Rover Sports.

The pattern is clear: the newer, heavier models with larger alloy wheels have the highest tyre failure rates. The P38A — lighter, with smaller wheels and higher-profile tyres — has the lowest.

Tip: Smaller wheels are more practical. The 20" option will always outperform the 22" or 23" for tyre life and pothole resistance on UK roads. TPMS sensors are battery-powered with a 7–10 year lifespan — budget for a full set on any car over 7 years old.


2. Brake Pad Wear — Heavy Car, Fast Wear

Brake pads worn below 1.5mm is a top-five failure on every Range Rover. Stopping 2,000–2,500 kg from motorway speed consumes pad material rapidly — and the front brakes do the majority of the work.

Tip: Always check the discs when replacing pads — at this wear rate, the discs are often due simultaneously. The front brakes wear roughly 2x faster than the rears.


3. Wiper Blades — The Surprise #3

Wiper blade failure ranks remarkably high across the Range Rover range — the Velar has the highest relative wiper failure rate of any vehicle we've analysed, with 1 in 40 cars failing on wipers alone.

Tip: Replace the wipers before every MOT. They're under £25 and it's one of the most common — and most preventable — reasons for failure.


4. SRS (Airbag) Warning Light

The SRS malfunction indicator lamp is a mandatory MOT failure — and it's unusually common across the Range Rover range, particularly on the L405.

The causes are consistent: corroded seat occupancy sensors (the wiring under the front seats degrades from dirt and moisture), failing SRS modules, and wiring harness faults. On the P38A, the driver's seat wiring is particularly vulnerable to damage from items stored under the seat.

Tip: The SRS light is a mandatory MOT failure. Have it diagnosed — it's usually a £100–300 sensor or wiring fix, not a £2,000 airbag replacement.


5. Suspension Bush & Joint Wear

Suspension wear affects every Range Rover, though the pattern differs between models with conventional coil springs and those with air suspension.

6. Number Plate Non-Conformity

An unusually prominent failure across Range Rovers — driven by the aftermarket accessory culture. Custom plate surrounds, show plates, tinted plate covers, and relocated plates (for aftermarket bumpers and spare wheel carriers) all fail the MOT.

7. Engine Management Light (MIL)

The MIL is a mandatory MOT failure since 2018. It's a significant issue across the Range Rover range, particularly on diesel models.

Tip: Diesel Range Rovers need regular motorway runs to regenerate the DPF. Short urban journeys are the #1 cause of MIL failures — and incomplete DPF regen accelerates timing chain wear through oil dilution.


8. Headlamp Aim & Headlamp Washers

Headlamp aim outside limits and inoperative headlamp washers are consistent failures across the range. On HID/xenon/LED-equipped models (most Range Rovers), working headlamp washers are mandatory for the MOT.

Tip: Test the headlamp washers before the MOT — they block easily from road grime. On cars with LED headlamps, individual LED failures within a cluster can trigger an MOT failure if more than half the LEDs in a unit are out.


9. Brake Pipe Corrosion (Older Models)

While less prominent than on Land Rovers, brake pipe corrosion still affects the older Range Rovers — particularly the L322, L320, and P38A.

10. Emissions & Exhaust (Older Models)

Emissions failures are concentrated on the older models — particularly the P38A with its aged V8 catalytic converters and the Evoque Mk1 with its Ingenium diesel DPF issues.
