The XK8 holds a 77.4% MOT pass rate — 0.7 percentage points above the UK average of 76.7%. Respectable for a car this old, and notably better than the steel-bodied S-Type (66.7%) and X-Type (63.7%). The GT's lower mileage and enthusiast ownership base help — but structural corrosion is dragging the numbers down.

This likely reflects survivor bias — the worst cars have already been scrapped, leaving the better-maintained examples. 1. Suspension — 24.4% of All Failures
Suspension is the largest category at 24.4% (1,067 items), but critically, the #1 individual failure item is actually structural corrosion at the suspension mounting points — counted here because it's directly related to the suspension's attachment to the body.

The structural corrosion at 415 is the headline — 1 in 15 XK8s fails because the steel body has corroded at the points where the suspension bolts to it. The rear subframe mounts are the worst area. Unlike the aluminium X150 that replaced it, the X100's steel structure is vulnerable to the same corrosion that afflicts the S-Type and X-Type.

Tip: Before spending money on new suspension components, check the mounting points. If the rear subframe mounts are corroded through, new bushes and arms are pointless. Get underneath and inspect carefully — the rear subframe area, the sills, and the floor pan around the seat belt mounts are the critical areas.

The combined emissions failures at 455+ are a standout — at 21–30 years old, the catalytic converters are degrading, the lambda sensors are past their useful life, and the engine management systems are showing their age. Structural corrosion accounts for 6.5% (284 items) as a separate category — but combined with the 415 suspension mounting point failures in section 1, structural issues account for roughly 16% of all failures. This is the X100's existential threat.

The X100's steel monocoque corrodes at the rear subframe mounts, the sills (which are structural), the floor pan, and the seat belt anchorages. This is the same fundamental issue as the S-Type and X-Type — steel bodies corrode, aluminium ones don't.
Tip: The rear subframe area is the critical inspection point. Surface rust on the sills can hide perforation underneath. Any X100 purchase should include a professional inspection from underneath — the structure determines whether the car lives or dies.

Beyond the MOT: Major XK8 X100 Faults That Drive Workshop Visits
Nikasil Cylinder Liner Failure (Early 4.0 V8)
The earliest XK8s (1996–1998) used Nikasil-coated cylinder liners that were attacked by high-sulphur fuel. The bore surface degrades, causing compression loss, rough running, and eventual misfires. Most affected engines have been replaced under warranty or by subsequent owners, but unidentified survivors still exist. A compression test will reveal the issue immediately.

Timing Chain Tensioner Failure
The AJ-V8's timing chain tensioners wear — the same fundamental issue that affects every Jaguar V8. The upper secondary chain is typically the first to go. A rattling noise on cold start is the warning. The 4.0-litre uses a different tensioner design to the later 4.2, but both are vulnerable.

Cooling System Failure
The AJ-V8's cooling system is critical — overheating warps the aluminium cylinder heads and can cause head gasket failure. The water pump weeps, the thermostat housing leaks, the viscous fan clutch wears (coupe), and the plastic expansion tank cracks. Gearbox Issues
The early 5-speed automatic (Mercedes-sourced 722.6) is generally reliable but can develop harsh shifting from degraded fluid. The later ZF 6HP26 (from 2003) can develop a shudder on the 2–3 upshift from torque converter wear. Both benefit from regular fluid changes.

Convertible Roof Hydraulics
The power-folding roof uses a hydraulic system with rams, hoses, and a pump. Leaks develop over time — the roof slows, stops mid-cycle, or fails to latch. The hydraulic fluid reservoir is under the rear deck and can be checked for level.

The aluminium X150 eliminated structural corrosion entirely (from ~16% to 0.3%) — the single biggest improvement between generations. The X100 performs better on dust covers (its rubber hasn't perished as uniformly) but worse on emissions (older engines, aged catalysts). Despite being older, the X100's pass rate is only 4 points behind the X150 — testament to the enthusiast ownership base keeping these cars maintained.
Keeping Your Jaguar XK8 on the Road
The XK8 is fast becoming a modern classic — beautiful lines, that wonderful V8 soundtrack, and genuine appreciation among enthusiasts. But the steel body is the elephant in the room. Combined structural corrosion (suspension mounts + body/chassis) accounts for roughly 16% of all failures — by far the biggest single issue.
If the structure is sound, the XK8 is a surprisingly practical classic. The AJ-V8 (post-Nikasil) is a solid engine, parts are available and affordable, and the mechanicals are well understood.
