The Jaguar XJ X300 was manufactured between 1994 and 1997 and was considered an evolution of the outgoing XJ40 generation that it replaced. The front of the car got a design refresh reverting to the four separate round headlamp arrangement. The rear also saw some changes with a fully integrated body-coloured rear bumper and reshaped wings to complement the new wrap-around taillights.

The interior remained somewhat similar to the XJ40 but with a few changes including updated seats and a redesigned steering wheel. The X300 was also mechanically similar to the XJ40 featuring a six cylinder AJ16 inline-six 3.2 L or 4.0 L engine mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission or 5-speed manual. The XJ6 was the base model featuring a 3.2 L version of the AJ16 and later uprated to 4.0 L.

The introduction of the XJR with a 4.0 L engine in the X300's production went a long way in broadening its appeal. The XJR was introduced as a high-perfomance sport model and went on to become the most significant car in the range. It was Jaguar's first ever supercharged road car. The XJR model bears the codename X306 and conspicuously sports 17" five-spoke alloy wheels while proudly displaying the "XJR" badging.

Other models in the range include the "Sovereign", which had a host of luxury features fitted as standard plus chrome adornments on the outside, the "Sport" aimed at a younger clientelle and the "Daimler/Vanden Plas" which was the highest trim level. The X300 was succeeded by the Jaguar XJ X308.
