Best Modern Classic: Range Rover P38A (1999–2002)

An unconventional recommendation — but the P38A's 75.2% pass rate is better than you'd expect for a 24–32 year old car, and these are genuinely appreciating. The later models (1999–2002) with the Thor V8 or BMW diesel are the ones to have.

Why this car: One of the great modern classics. Commanding presence. The last Range Rover with a V8 engine note that shakes buildings. The GEMS/Thor V8 is mechanically simple. Enthusiast community is strong.

Watch for: Air suspension (EAS failure is the #1 reason P38As are scrapped — budget for it or convert to coils), structural corrosion (4.2% — inspect the chassis carefully), exhaust manifold leaks (the V8's chronic issue), emissions (9.3% of failures — aged cats and lambda sensors), BeCM electrical gremlins.

Range Rover L322 (2002–2012) — ~78% Pass Rate

The L322 is a magnificent vehicle — but it's complex, expensive to maintain, and the 2002–2006 BMW-era cars have additional electrical fragility. The 2006+ Jaguar V8/TDV8 models are better. Air suspension, brake pipe corrosion, and suspension wear are the main MOT risks.

Shares much with the Discovery 3 — and shares its MOT weaknesses too. Suspension bush wear, brake pipe corrosion, and air suspension failure are the main issues. The Supercharged V8 models are thrilling but expensive to maintain.

The Key Insight: Aluminium Changed Everything

The L405 was the first full-size Range Rover with an aluminium body. Its pass rate (85.3%) is 10 points higher than the steel-bodied P38A (75.2%), and structural corrosion dropped from 4.2% to 0.2%. The same pattern holds across the Evoque, Velar, and Sport — the newer aluminium-intensive models are fundamentally more reliable because the body outlasts the components.

When buying a used Range Rover, prioritise the aluminium-bodied models (L405+, Velar, Evoque Mk2, Sport L494+). The body will never be the problem — leaving you free to focus on the mechanicals.
