Discovery 2 (1998 – 2004) - L318 parts

The Land Rover Discovery 2 (L318) was produced from 1998 to 2004 as an evolution of the original Discovery, retaining the rugged ladder-frame chassis and live rear axle that made the original so capable off-road. Externally it received revised styling with a new front end, reshaped bumpers, and the distinctive stepped roofline that has become a Discovery hallmark.

Engine options include a 2.5-litre Td5 five-cylinder turbodiesel — the last Land Rover-designed diesel engine — producing 137 PS, and a 4.0-litre Rover V8 petrol with 185 PS. Both are paired with a 4-speed automatic (ZF 4HP22) or 5-speed manual gearbox (R380), with permanent four-wheel drive through a two-speed transfer case and lockable centre differential. The Td5 remains the more popular choice for its torque and fuel economy.

The Discovery 2 introduced Active Cornering Enhancement (ACE) — a hydraulic anti-roll system that uses sensors to detect body roll and actively counteract it. The interior brought improved comfort with better seats, revised dashboard, and available dual-zone climate control. Towing capacity is an impressive 3,500 kg, making it a popular choice for caravanning and horse boxes.

With a kerb weight of 2,055–2,175 kg and a wading depth of 500mm, the Discovery 2 remains one of the most capable and affordable serious off-roaders available. Its simplicity compared to modern Land Rovers makes it popular with enthusiasts, though rust and age-related issues mean good parts supply is essential.
