The Land Rover Freelander 1 (L314) was produced from 1997 to 2006 as Land Rover's first compact SUV, and it quickly became the best-selling 4x4 in Europe. A radical departure from traditional Land Rover design, the Freelander used a monocoque construction rather than a ladder-frame chassis, making it lighter and more car-like to drive while retaining genuine off-road ability.
Engine options include a 1.8-litre Rover K-Series four-cylinder petrol (known for head gasket issues), a 2.5-litre KV6 V6 petrol producing 177 PS, and a 2.0-litre BMW-sourced Td4 turbodiesel — the most popular choice for its reliability and fuel economy. The Td4 was available with a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic (Jatco), while the petrol models offered a 5-speed manual or CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). All models feature permanent all-wheel drive with Hill Descent Control — a Land Rover first that became an industry standard.
Available in both five-door estate and three-door hardback/softback body styles, the Freelander offered surprising versatility for its size. The interior featured a practical layout with split-folding rear seats, and the raised driving position gave good visibility. A significant facelift in 2003 brought revised styling, improved interior quality, and the introduction of the Td4 automatic.
With a kerb weight of 1,530–1,670 kg and an independently sprung suspension setup all round (MacPherson strut front, multi-link rear), the Freelander 1 sold over 250,000 units and established the compact premium SUV segment that Land Rover continues to dominate with the Discovery Sport today.
