The New Defender (L663) launched in 2020 as a ground-up reimagining of Land Rover's most iconic nameplate. Built on the D7x aluminium monocoque platform — the stiffest body structure Land Rover has ever produced — it replaces the body-on-frame construction of the original with a design three times stiffer than a traditional ladder chassis, while retaining serious off-road credentials.

Available in 90 (three-door) and 110 (five-door) body styles, with a 130 (eight-seat) variant added in 2022, the Defender offers 2.0-litre Ingenium four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, a 3.0-litre inline-six with mild-hybrid technology (P400/D300), and the range-topping 5.0-litre supercharged V8 (P525) — later replaced by the BMW-sourced 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8. All models use a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission with permanent all-wheel drive, a twin-speed transfer box, and an electronically locking centre differential.

The Defender features Terrain Response 2 with a configurable off-road mode, optional air suspension with 291mm of ground clearance, a maximum wading depth of 900mm, and approach/departure angles of up to 38°/40°. The interior brings a utilitarian-modern design with exposed structural elements, a Pivi Pro touchscreen, and a flexible cargo area with optional fold-down tailgate seating.

With a kerb weight of 2,100–2,450 kg and a towing capacity of up to 3,500 kg, the New Defender has quickly become one of Land Rover's best-selling models, combining genuine off-road ability with the refinement and technology expected of a modern premium SUV.
